In the small ‘factories’, the making of Moroccan lamps is still real craftsmanship, usually carried out by the whole family. These are often illiterate people who have been making lamps for generations. They therefore set great store by craftsmanship. Unfortunately, the earnings that these craftsmen make from their Moroccan lamps are barely enough to make ends meet. Therefore, we pay a fair price for our lamps.

Which lamp for the Moroccan lamp?

Which lamp you use makes a big difference to the atmosphere and look of a Moroccan lamp. Of course, you want to create the right mood lighting in a particular room and you can only do this if you use a good lamp. Basically, a Moroccan lamp always creates a warm and soothing atmosphere. The lamp itself is often hidden by grids, holes or coloured glass. So it is important to find the right lamp. It is best to go for a lamp that is bright (lumen), but also radiates warmth. Here are some tips and advice for choosing the right lamp.

Spherical glass

If you’re going for a bulbous, pear-shaped lamp (which most closely resembles our traditional incandescent lamp), choose a clear lamp, not a matt one. Clear bulbs give off rays of light that are filtered through the holes of the Moroccan bulb. This sharpens the appearance of the lamp and gives you nice sharp shadows. Matt lamps, on the other hand, have a slightly subdued light of their own. This means that the Moroccan lamp will only dampen this light even more and the lamp will lose the effect it wants to radiate.

Colour of the lamp

Another important element of a Moroccan lamp to make it stand out is the colour of the light. Moroccan lamps are meant to give the room a warm look. A bright white light is therefore simply not suitable for the fitting of a Moroccan lamp. It is best to use a lamp that emits ‘warm white’ or ‘soft white’ light. We recommend a lamp with 2700 – 3000 Kelvin. Do not use bright white lamps or daylight lamps. With the right lamp, your Moroccan lamp will radiate the right warmth and softness.

The brightness of the lamp

A common misconception is that a bright bulb means the whole room is brightly lit. This is just as untrue as saying that a warm lamp would illuminate the room badly. The warmth, i.e. the colour of the lamp, is given in K (Kelvin). The brightness, i.e. the strength of the lamp, is expressed in Lumen. The higher the number of Lumen, the stronger the lamp radiates. This can be the case for any colour. We already mentioned that you should always choose a warm colour for a Moroccan lamp. On average, a lamp of between 800 and 1100 Lumen is suitable, but it is also a question of trying it out.

LED lamp or not?

From an environmental point of view, it is by far the best to use an LED lamp. LED lamps are energy-efficient and last a very long time. An LED lamp actually consists of many small lamps (filaments) and these provide a much wider spread of light. This means that the most characteristic element of the Moroccan lamp, the shadow, is not shown to its full advantage. The shadows are simply not rendered bright enough with an LED lamp. Therefore, for a Moroccan lamp, it is better to choose a halogen lamp. Do you really want an LED lamp? Then look for LED lamps with as few filaments as possible.

Which lamp do we recommend?

There are several suitable lamps for a Moroccan lamp. If you follow our guidelines a little, you will often come a long way. In this case, take a clear halogen lamp of 2700 – 3000 Kelvin and 800 – 1100 Lumen. There are various types of these lamps on the market. We highly recommend the Eco Halogen lamp. This lamp perfectly meets the requirements of a Moroccan lamp to radiate the right atmosphere.
